Cancún, the Caribbean coast and the Mayan heartland

The best way to discover the Riviera Maya in depth: Cancún, Puerto Morelos, the Cenote Route, Playa del Carmen, Akumal, Tulum, Cobá, Sian Ka'an, Valladolid and Chichén Itzá. The perfect mix of good asphalt, jungle stretches and back roads.

Approx. 600-700 km over 5 days, starting in Cancún or Playa del Carmen.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1 – Arrival and first adrenaline: Cancún / Playa del Carmen → Puerto Morelos – Cenote Route

You start in Cancún or Playa del Carmen with the roar of the engine and the smell of salt in the air. You take Highway 307 south, but very soon you turn off onto the famous Cenote Route, a narrow road surrounded by low jungle, passing dozens of signs inviting you to dive into crystal-clear pools.

Must-stop spots: Casa Tortuga or Cenote Azul (perfect for a quick dip with the bike parked nearby). You end the day in Playa del Carmen or Puerto Morelos, with a cold beer and the sunset on Fifth Avenue or on the beach. Kilometers: ~80-120 km. Feeling: total freedom from the very first minute.

  2. Day 2 – The wildest coast: Playa del Carmen → Akumal → Tulum

A pure coastal route along the 307, following the turquoise Caribbean and leaning into gentle curves. Quiet beaches like Xpu-Há or Xcacel, some of the most beautiful and least crowded. In Akumal you swim with sea turtles (leave the bike in the parking lot and grab a snorkel).

Arrival in Tulum at sunset: Mayan ruins on the cliff with the bike parked below. Night in Tulum, in the hotel zone or in town, with tacos al pastor and live music. Kilometers: ~130 km. Vibe: road + sea + history.

  3. Day 3 – Jungle, ruins and epic cenotes: Tulum → Cobá

Today you head straight into the jungle. The road to Cobá takes about 45 minutes. You climb the Nohoch Mul pyramid, the tallest accessible one in the area, then ride to nearby cenotes: Choo-Ha, Multún-Ha or the famous Gran Cenote (with turtles and bats).

Optional: a detour to Muyil and into the Sian Ka'an Reserve on more rustic roads (if your motorcycle allows it), or further south toward Punta Allen (road with stretches of hard sand). Distance: ~120-180 km. Excitement: jungle, pyramids and magical underground water.

  4. Day 4 – The great leap inland: Tulum → Valladolid → Chichén Itzá (optional)

You leave the coast and ride inland on Highway 180 toward the Mayan heartland: straight road, good asphalt, strong wind and the smell of the countryside. Valladolid is a beautiful colonial town with a cathedral and colorful streets, perfect for eating cochinita pibil. Visit Cenote Zací, right in the center, or the spectacular Suytun, Samulá and Xkekén.

If you are up for the classic: Chichén Itzá (very early to avoid the crowds) plus Cenote Ik Kil. Night in Valladolid, or in Mérida if you go further. Kilometers: ~180-250 km. Feeling: from beach paradise to ancient culture.

  5. Day 5 – Triumphant return with a taste of the sea: Valladolid → Cancún / Playa del Carmen

A relaxed ride along routes 180 and 307. Stop at the cenotes you missed, at Río Secreto for a premium experience, or simply enjoy the road with sea views on the way back.

Epic finale: sunset in Cancún or Playa del Carmen, your bike parked, a cold beer in hand and the satisfaction of having experienced the Riviera Maya like few people do: on two wheels.
