A jungle loop from Cancún

A loop from Cancún built around dirt roads, trails and jungle: Quintana Roo → Campeche → Chiapas → Tabasco and back through Yucatán. Remote Mayan ruins, the Lacandon Jungle and turquoise waterfalls.

Dual-purpose motorcycle tour that starts and finishes in Cancún: 7 full days, ~1,600-1,800 km in total, 60-80% dirt depending on the day.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1 – Coastal-jungle kickoff: Cancún → Bacalar / Chetumal → Calakmul Reserve (Quintana Roo → Campeche)

Departure from Cancún heading south toward Bacalar, the Lagoon of Seven Colors, and Chetumal. From there you take the Escárcega highway and very soon turn onto secondary dirt roads and trails heading into the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve: low jungle with loose stones, mud if it has rained and small stream crossings.

About 60 km of dirt roads inside the reserve, one of the most iconic adventure routes on the peninsula, and a quick visit to the tallest pyramids of the Mayan region, surrounded by untouched jungle. Overnight in a rustic camp or cabins. ~220-280 km (70% dirt). Feeling: absolute solitude and howler monkeys.

  2. Day 2 – Heart of the lowland jungle: Calakmul → Escárcega → trails toward Champotón / Candelaria

More of Calakmul's internal roads (with luck you might see jaguars or tapirs), then dirt roads north to trails parallel to Route 186, avoiding asphalt as much as possible. Medium jungle, hidden cenotes, roads with roots and sand.

Optional: detour to less-traveled areas near Conhuas or south of Escárcega. Overnight in Escárcega or a nearby town (basic hotel). ~240-300 km (60-70% off-road). A day of intense heat and dust.

  3. Day 3 – Escárcega → Palenque (via secondary dirt roads in Chiapas)

Trails parallel to highways 186/199: rural roads, humid high jungle, rocky climbs and descents, and possible mud if it has rained recently.

Arrival in Palenque in the afternoon for a quick visit to the ruins and waterfalls. Overnight in Palenque (jungle cabins or town). ~240-300 km (70% dirt). A change of ecosystem: greener, more humid jungle.

  4. Day 4 – The wildest day: Palenque → Bonampak → Yaxchilán → Lacanjá

Departure at 5-6 am. First, about 60-80 km of rough dirt road to Bonampak and its impressive Mayan murals. Then a dirt track to Frontera Corozal and a boat across the Usumacinta River (about 40 minutes) to Yaxchilán: riverside ruins, howler monkeys and pristine jungle.

Return on the same dirt road (extreme mud if it rains). Overnight in Lacandon cabins or at the Río Lacanjá campsite, an authentic indigenous experience. About 180-240 km by motorcycle and boat (80-90% true off-road). An epic, demanding day.

  5. Day 5 – Waterfalls and the ride north: Lacanjá → Agua Azul → Misol-Ha → Ocosingo / Tenosique

Dirt roads north with a mandatory detour to the Agua Azul waterfalls (gravel access and turquoise pools for swimming), then the spectacular Misol-Ha waterfall.

Optional: an extra detour to Toniná if time and energy allow. Overnight in Ocosingo or Tenosique. ~220-280 km (70% dirt and wet roads).

  6. Day 6 – Tabasco jungle: Tenosique / Palenque area → Villahermosa via trails and rivers

A northern route on dirt roads parallel to the Usumacinta: sticky mud, small river crossings, light swamps and rural communities in the flatter, more humid Tabasco jungle.

Arrival in Villahermosa or Paraíso in the afternoon, with optional time on a Gulf of Mexico beach. Overnight in Villahermosa or nearby. ~280-350 km (60-75% off-road).

  7. Day 7 – Triumphant return to the Caribbean: Villahermosa → Escárcega → Chetumal → Bacalar → Cancún

A quick run on routes 186/307, with some final off-road sections south of Escárcega or near Xpujil to finish in the jungle, and a stop in Bacalar if time allows (Lagoon of Seven Colors and a cold beer).

Arrival in Cancún at sunset: mud-covered motorcycle, tired body, total satisfaction. ~350-420 km (40-60% dirt at the start, then more pavement to arrive before dark).
